Week 12
This week I watched the title sequence for A Beautiful Mind. Like last week, since it is only a title sequence, there is not much in the way of a story, but the images used do provide certain information. The sequence consisted of a black background with a hand drawing in line and various other parts of some king of diagram. This provides the impression that who ever the hand belongs to is very intelligent.
After the very first part of the movie, just the word “IMAGINE” in white centered on black, the camera is always moving. It is either panning across the stage following the drawn lines or the hand as it continues write, or it is slowly zooming in or out.
There are times when the hand will fade out and then fade in again in another part of the screen. There are also times when the writing on the screen will fade to another set of drawn lines and symbols. When the names are listed, another type of transition is used, a line is drawn by the hand, and the camera moves to follow this, coming to another name. The transition that brings in the movie’s title involved the lines on the screen breaking up and moving or twisting around, eventually revealing the text. For the last transition in the movie, the hand draws a rectangle, and the camera zooms into it, and as it is zooming, the first scene of the movie is being faded in.
The music used is a slow and relaxed sounded orchestrated piece and this fits well with sort of simplicity that is created by having just white lines on a black background. This also serves to create a sense of mystery. You cannot tell who the hand belongs to and what it could be drawing.
