Week 6

This week I watched a movie called Armageddon. The story starts out in space where the camera pans from a peaceful looking planet to a large object that is moving towards it. The movie then cuts to an odd looking character on the planet holding a sign saying “THE EGG IS NIGH.” The shot then switches back and forth between the characters face and the giant egg entering the planets atmosphere. As it looks like the end really is coming, the character sees an egg cup in the ground. He pulls it out and holds it pointed toward the sky. The egg cup grows bigger and catches the giant egg saving the planet.

The animation is all very smooth and looks like it was all done with tweening. The animator creates some very nice looking effects in the movie using transparencies and simple tweens, like the egg coming in or shadows moving. The movie also uses a color palette of mostly blues which gives it the feel of night time. The background used scrolling stars and clouds.

The movie also had music that went with it perfectly and matched the different parts of the story. It adds a certain tension to the movie. The animation does not use any sound effects, but the do not seem to be necessary with the music that is used.

Two things I liked about the movie were the way the lighting and the shadows were done and the way the animator created the clouds of dust. The lighting and shadows really draw the viewer into the movie, for example you can tell by the way the lighting and shadows change, that the egg is right overhead. The clouds of dust were simple graphics with a spiral like design and they created a really nice effect when they were used.
