Week 9

This week I watched a movie called The Freelancer. This animation revolved around a samurai who is attacked, and then wins the ensuing fight. There is a short dialogue between the 2 combatants, which was done using only text.

The animation in this movie is all very fluid, probably due to a higher frame rate. The movement of the samurai’s cloak and hair in the wind are 2 examples of this. The used of movie clips in this animation is also obvious. The samurai standing in the wind, the rippling of his cloak can be seen repeating.

This movie uses various sound effects, but not music or voices. There is a constant wind gust looping in the background, as well as the sounds of the characters swords and them leaping through the air. The use of only a wind loop instead of music for a background sounds I think works well for this movie and serves to create a certain mood when combined with the background.

The backgrounds in this movie consist of a brown fog with some rocks off in the distance. In some cases the fog is scrolling, and in others it is still, but its dull color works well.

There are only a small amount of different camera angles used, but the ones that were chosen work fairly well for the movie. Some of the more shots that were more interesting were the close up of the samurais hand on his sword or the camera panning past the bad guy.
