Week 3
Today I watched a movie called Kunstbar, which was the number one cartoon at Flash Forward in the San Francisco 2003.
The movie is about a guy who goes into a bar, but every drink he has turns him into something that looks like it came out of a famous piece of artwork. One drink for example turns the main character into the Leonardo da Vinci’s Study of Proportions. The various artists that are mimicked in this animation allow it to take on several very different styles at various points. This also allows for several different animation techniques to be used. Similar techniques have been used in other movies that we have seen, but in this movie, the animator achieved a very different result.
Like many of the other movies we watched, the background colors were mainly monochromatic. The colors were for the most part flat, but there were times, when this would change, namely when imitating certain pieces of artwork, but would always change back when the scene shifted back to the bar.
The music was fairly subtle, but this too changed with the different styles. Overall it helped to enhance the bizarre and sort of creepy feel that the events on screen were conveying. The sound effects too fit in well with the various parts of the movie. For example the sounds glasses being put down or drinks being poured really added to the feeling of being in a bar, as odd as this one was.
While the main character does move his arms or tip his head, much of the story is conveyed by his facial expressions. They are done extremely well, but the way they were done was still very simple; tweening various parts of the face, or just replacing them all together with other symbols.
