This week I watched an animation called Teh Lizard King. The story starts out showing a cityscape at sunset before cutting to an odd looking shop crammed between two buildings. It’s now dark and foggy as a women walks past and notices the store. She goes in and ends up trying on an old fashioned looking dress. Then she screams. The shot then cuts to the hero, who looks up when he hears the scream, right before he gets punched in the face. He then runs off to find the source of the scream and he finds the women, who has been turned into a zombie by the dress.
The animation in this movie seems to have been done for the most part by motion tweening. It is done in an anime type style, and it is especially apparent in the expressions of the main character. His expressions are often over exaggerated and help express emotion, which is necessary since the characters do not have voices, all the dialogue is done through text. The backgrounds are static and look like they were painted. They work well in creating the illusion of a dark, creepy city on a foggy night.
The sound effects used in the movie also enhance the mood. The way you can hear the sound of the woman’s footsteps for example adds to the fact the rest of the city seems empty. There are also a set of creepy sounds used when the woman is being overcome by evil. There are ambient background noises throughout most of the movie, and certain scenes where there is music. The music in the shop sounds old fashioned and like its being played on a record player, or later in the movie, there is a song played that adds to the tension of the movie as the action builds.
There are also a variety of interesting camera angles that are used. A shot of the woman’s feet as she walks alone, her hand as it reaches for the door of the shop, or on the ground looking past the hero towards the guy that knocked him to the ground.
