Week 5
Since we were allowed to pick any flash movie to pick apart this week, I went back to a movie named There She Isthat I remember watching sometime last semester from a Korean site, Sambakza.
The story is set in a world where there are cats and rabbits and each sort of keep to themselves. The movie starts off with a girl rabbit that sees a cat while they’re at the vending machines, and she falls in love with him. The cat spends the rest of the movie on the run from the rabbit, who won’t give up. At the end however, the cat gives in, and sees that he might like the rabbit back.
The animation in this movie is very well done and consists of frame by frame animation and motion tweening. One scene in the movie uses a scrolling background, other people flying past the camera, and lines to show motion as we are given the point of view of the rabbit as she chases the cat down a crowded street. The various expressions of the characters have are also done extremely well. In many cases, the expressions are exaggerated by the animator’s use of an anime style. The backgrounds, while not incredibly detailed, are still very effective. They usually consisted of simple buildings with a flat tan color in front of a sky that looks like something that was painted.
This movie uses a variety of different camera angles, over the shoulder shots, close ups of faces, or from the point of view of the rabbit. There so several interesting transitions used in this movie. For example, a street sign used during the title screen served as a transition to a scene where the cat was being chased down a road. Another example when one of the hearts floating around the rabbit was used to transition to a scene that use a solid pink background.
The entire movie is set to a song with the only sound effects being the noises made by the vending machine during the first few seconds. The song is in Korean, but even without being able to understand the words, it creates a certain mood that works well for the movie.
